Hi Prateek, Your question has prompted me to write a long mail,, so please bear with me. If there are people associated with any NGO on this mailing list, please take note of this problem. The tips to request a book from a publisher are at the end of the mail.
I have been requesting e-books from publishers and even authors for more than 3 years. Every year, I send out emails and fax requesting the ebooks that I require for my course. Unfortunately, my success rate has been quite dismal. Usually, I receive 3 out of 10 ebooks that I request. The reason is a lack of Disability Service Office in any Indian University. The publishing offices in India are all branches of forreign publishing companies. If there are a few Indian publishing companies, they do not grasp the concept of an ebook. Publishers in the US require a student to request ebooks necessary for her course through a Disability Service Office that is attached to her university. The reason is for some one, who is not related to the student in any way, to examine the disability documentation and to ensure the existance of a proof of purchase. Now, since no such offices exist in India, authors and publishers are reluctant to handout electronic copies. They dont have any sure knowledge that you are what you say you are. Also, they dont know if you have really purchased the book. I hope that such an office would be formed... some day. Requesting ebooks from the authors is also an unsuccessful endeavour. The copyright of the book is with the publisher and the author cannot distribute electronic copies. If you wish to try your hand at requesting ebooks, then perhaps these few tips may help you. 1. Find the right person or department in a particular publishing company to request for alternate format from this website. http://www.publisherlookup.com/ 2. Explain about your disability in simple language and how you use the screen reader to access your PC. 3. Give full details of the book, i.e. title, author, year of publishing, ISBN, etc. 4. Express your willingness to send a scanned image of your disability certificate or any such document, along with any proof of purchase that may be required.
