Hi, Brenda, I'm a little ahead of you but certainly no expert when it comes to databases. There is one site I would recommend and that is databaselessons.com which belongs to Richard Kiley. He explains things very well and covers a variety of topics.
For personal help and answering questions I rely on www.techguy.com. There are many experts who monitor the site and are generous with their time and skills. I was particularly helped by a programmer in Wales - because of the time difference I often had answers when I logged on in the morning! Having said this I will reiterate what you already realize: there's no substitute for self discovery. Occasionally I was able to improve on the answers I got on techguy and post them back. The first time you do that you will get a real sense of accomplishment.
