They compile INTEL_MEI and INTEL_MEI_ME into the kernel:
http://kernel.opensuse.org/cgit/kernel-source/tree/config/x86_64/default?h=openSUSE-13.1

According to this they do it for an "Altera FPGA firmware download module".
They also maintain custom patches for the kernel.

Arch compiles the MEI stuff as modules which doesn't work correctly it seems.
