Kevin, Nick, etc. <Pedantic AD Schema Lesson>
Certain attributes in the schema are defined as linked attributes (you can tell by the presence of a linkID attribute in the attributeSchema object). These attributes are used to maintain a cross reference relationship between two objects such that if the linked-to object is moved or renamed, the cross-reference relationship is maintained automatically by the DS. LinkIDs have to be unique within a schema. An example is the member/memberOf attribute pair. The forward link attribute attributeSchema object (in this case the member attribute, which is used by the group class) must have an even-valued linkID, must have a distinguished name syntax (or one of the X.400 name syntaxes), and can be single- or multi-valued. The back link attribute definition (in this case the memberOf attribute, which is used by the user object) must have distinguished name syntax and have an odd linkID value equal to the linkID of the forward link attribute plus one, and must be multivalued. Whenever a forward link value is set on an object (e.g., adding a DN to the member attribute of a group), the DS will automatically add the DN of this object (the group DN) to the back link attribute (the memberOf attribute) in the linked-to object (the user that was added to the group). If either of the objects is moved or renamed, the DS will automatically update either or both attributes appropriately. Pretty cool, actually. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/netdir/ad/l inked_attributes.asp describes this to some extent. </Pedantic AD Schema Lesson> -gil Gil Kirkpatrick Chief Technology Officer, NetPro Author of "Active Directory Programming" from MacMillan Got eBook?
