My understanding is that the attribute isn't set on the object, it's a
reference to a link from another object. 
Presumably, that's how things like the directreports attribute is set in
the AD. 
A quick search on the net digs up the follow presentations which
mentions back links.

What ARE the errors that you're getting with NTFRS?  FRS log?

What are the errors that are showing up in th DS log, system log?
