Yeah, I have to agree with you on the licensing costs on user basis, but it sure beats the hell out of the fights over the test lab, or the added costs that might be associated with hardware, etc. for test environments for everyone who THINKS they need it.

BTW, I'm impressed by the level of co-operation and (the word CONTROL keeps wanting to creep in, but I don't want to use that....) work ethic you seem to have with your dev folks.  Granted - you're 100% correct.  Having support from the top is hugely important, and one of the prime things that I'm suffering from right now - management with no backbone, which puts me into the position of being the bitch of each and every idiot client want and desire, however completely unrealistic, undesireable and undeliverable it might be.  But hey!  I'm not bitter!  ;-)

I agree, VMWare is certainly cool (use it at home for testing new software), however we dont support it for the work environment (mainly due to licensing costs). My single user license wasnt too expensive, but when you start doing the multiplications for 70+ application developers and the associated overheads (changes to the images for vmware support etc), the costs become a bit prohibitive.

Hmmmm..... and that's what I though VMWare was for!  <VBG>

BTW, I agree wholeheartedly about your use of ADAM.  As I said, this is a very cool product.

ADAM is also good for those applications that want to start doing some AD integration functionality without actually having to set up an AD forest.

Makes us Infrastructure guys nice and happy, don't have to keep setting up and pulling down AD forests every week or so for the apps dev guys :)

IMHO, ADAM is the more exciting of the two.  Granted MMS is nice in what it does (been working with it on and off for a while) but ADAM is really a special product in what you can do with it.  For those of you that want to integrate your application, but don't want to go to the time expense and trouble of integrating AD or directory sevices (e.g. LDAP) into the app natively, ADAM could be your answer.

Other solutions abound - from simple services to security uses.

I just got word that MMS 2003 and ADAM 2003 are shipping the week of July 3rd.

Now to afford the server requirements to run MMS 2003.

Requirements for MMS 2003

Windows 2003 EE
SQL 2000 EE
Visual Studio .NET 2003
Hardware

Makes Simple Sync look very attractive, but the MMS requirements do offer some tangible benefits.
