Yup. I'm assuming the poster meant EMC/DANTZ Retrospect. http://www.dantz.com/en/products/win_singleserver/add_ons.dtml
What bothers me is that you're using two different backup programs with no posted reason why. Not that you can't or shouldn't, but it's puzzling why you want that setup. As mentioned in earlier posts, you can backup with BE to disk so is Retrospect adding any value? Or is BE adding any value? Is there just some confusion? Nevertheless, what's more important is how you've tested this. When you test the restores, does it work? If so, I'm not sure there's a problem to be solved yet. That doesn't mean it is a "flat file backup". They all use the Exchange APIs to do it, they just store the data to a disk file. Doing an incremental or differential of an Exchange storage group during the day is rather like doing SQL backups of transaction logs - it can get you closer to a point-in-time recovery in the case of a disaster. I've used them in a lab situation. Never needed one in a live recovery. I know very few clients that do this. I can imagine that some businesses might require it. Is it quiescing the database in some way? I didn't think that was possible in E2K. If you were running E2K3 I would guess they were using WSS (rather than a flat file) but in the scenario you describe - well, I have to ask - have you ever tested to make sure you could use one of those backups if you needed to?
