Subject: [acupa-l] Policy Office

Good morning,

As we work through the analysis of our policy development process, we have
found that we may want to recommend to the University that they create a Policy
Office - or, at the minimum a full time position dedicated to policy management
(not approval, just management of policy). I thought I could reach out to this
group and see what your experience has been. I am looking to find out:

1 - Do you have a Policy Office / Manager?
Last year we established a full time position "University Policy and Compliance
Training Director" in the Office of University Compliance and Integrity. We
don't have a "policy office" per se, but I sometimes use the term if I need to
get someone to agree to do something.
;-)

2 - If so, what are the responsibilities of the Policy Office?
This is my description...not officially stated anywhere yet: Manage the
university policy process. Ensure that a variety of standards are adhered to.
Liaison with policy coordinators in Responsible Offices, University Senate, and
other governance bodies. Support individuals and groups who want/need to
develop or revise policies. Manage the university policy website and database
of university policies. Inventory/provide access to department policies.

3 - How is it staffed - how many people and what are their duties?
Full time director and a full time "Moritz" fellow...a Moritz fellow is a
recent graduate of our law school, classified as an intern, that we can hire
for up to 3 years. Director tends to attend to the bigger picture issues,
Moritz fellow to the details, but this is based on our strengths, rather than
job descriptions.

4 - What is the reporting structure - does the Policy Office/Manager report to
the President/Chancellor or maybe the General Counsel?

Policy Director is part of University Compliance and Integrity, which reports
to Legal Affairs which reports to the President.

Thank you all for your help in our endeavor.
Ellen
