Sheryl Sheryl Rippke, Policy Administrator Office of University Counsel 3550 Beardshear Hall Ames, IA 50014 515-294-1385 [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Policy Library<http://policy.iastate.edu/> From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ellen M Hemmerlein Sent: Friday, October 10, 2014 8:05 AM To: Institutional policy-related discussions ([email protected]) Subject: [acupa-l] Policy Office Good morning, As we work through the analysis of our policy development process, we have found that we may want to recommend to the University that they create a Policy Office - or, at the minimum a full time position dedicated to policy management (not approval, just management of policy). I thought I could reach out to this group and see what your experience has been. I am looking to find out: 1 - Do you have a Policy Office / Manager? I am the policy administrator. No "office" other than my individual office. 2 - If so, what are the responsibilities of the Policy Office? Maintenance of policies and the policy library. Shepherd of the process and standardization for new policies and revisions. Chair of the Policy Library Advisory Committee. Sometimes I actively facilitate or am a member of a policy development team; sometimes I have a more advisory and review role. Keeper of records regarding policy development and the efforts to engage stakeholders. Route documents for signatures (i.e. the policy development plan and later the final version of the policy). And other odds and ends that I've inherited over the past 18 year since 2005 when my position was created. 3 - How is it staffed - how many people and what are their duties? Just me, but I get some support from the administrative staff in the Office of University Counsel, where I am located. 4 - What is the reporting structure - does the Policy Office/Manager report to the President/Chancellor or maybe the General Counsel? I report to the general counsel for the past couple years. Before that I reported directly to the university president. I much prefer the present arrangement. Thank you all for your help in our endeavor. Ellen Ellen M.
