Hi Pamela,

My campus' culture was not one to endorse the Minnesota model of a policy
committee. Also, our leaders rejected the idea of using an online system to
approve policies. They did not want another system that they had to log in to
and felt that a system would not allow for the dialog to which they were
accustomed. I envy both Michele and Sheryl!!

What I have found most effective is to involve the senior leader who I
ultimately responsible for the unit that is proposing the policy's revision or
creation. I meet with all of our vice provosts individually every other week.
In these meetings, I keep them updated on policy work in their units and they
give me an indication as to whether it is important to them and if they want
the project to move forward. When policies are sent to other leaders for
review, we give a comment deadline and provide a reminder before the deadline.
If they ignore the comment period, the policy project moves forward. If their
input is critical, I set a meeting. Legal is a bit of a different animal (no
offense Bob). When policies stall there, I generally have to get the senior
leader who initially endorsed the policy to break the log jam.

I hope this is helpful! At least you know you are not alone. :)

Subject: [acupa-l] Question for ACUPA Listserv

Policy Review Process
Hello Everyone,
We have been encountering significant delays in moving policies through the
final review stage of our policy process. The process seems to break down at
the point when a policy is sent to legal or other high level reviewers (i.e.,
vice presidents).
What solutions, practices, or strategies do you use to obtain timely responses
from high level reviewers?
I appreciate your thoughts and time on this.
Thanks,
Pam
