Define "domain".

Exchange servers process e-mail in domains. Those are not what we are
talking about.

We are talking about Active Directory domains.

Any fully-qualified-domain-name consists of two parts: a hostname, and a
domain name. For example, my Exchange server is named
Win2003-Exch.TheEssentialExchange.com. The hostnames on an Exchange server
may NEVER be changed while Exchange is installed. That is, Win2003-Exch must
always retain that hostname while Exchange is installed.

In Exchange Server 2003, the Active directory domain name may be changed -
but never the hostname.

In the corner case of an Exchange Server that is also a DC, renaming the
domain is a breaking change, and is not supported. And is known to not work.

So what does this mean exchange servers cannot be renamed or moved to a
different domain?

Exchange Servers cannot be renamed. Period.

So, there are no easy ways. Some are easier than others, but none are easy.

So, I have somewhat similar project coming up, and can see many ways to
this the hard way, but not sure how to do it easy. I have one domain with
two DCs...one of which is also an Exchange server. This domain
(company.com)is used by two organizations that now want their own separate
networks. One organization will keep the current server hardware. It was
decided that the other group would be small enough to use SBS 2003. The
tricky part is that the org moving to SBS is the one who controls the name
for the existing domain and will use it on their network.

So, do I demote one DC and then create a new forest and domain, then setup a
trust and migrate everyone? Do I run the risk of totally screwing Exchange
since it is on a DC?

Hi.

We are a college and we are changing out name thus the domain name will have
to be changed.

I am running AD on windows 2003 serve and exchange 2003 for email.. Is it
best to setup a new domain and migrate users to that or try to rename the
current one in place.

Any suggestions would be helpful

Thanks

Ryan
