Subject: [AP] AVI to DVD

<<I had asked a question in my previous post regarding rendering the video
and i've recieved very helpful responses.

I'm able to encode my video to one complete AVI file which when played on
Real player works very well but when i try to Export it to DVD the progress
bar gets stuck after sometime and i'm not even able to cancel the project.

I would like to know that after rendering and encoding the video to a single
AVI, do we still have any file format incompatibility issues with the video?
Isn't that complete AVI clean and smooth enough to be used for buring a
blank DVD? What are the things to be considered for burning a DVD?>>

Amit,

"file format incompatibility issues with the video" is putting it mildly.

AVI is NOT a file format used in "DVD-video".

When I use the phrase "DVD-video" I am referring to DVD's that will play in
a set-top "DVD player".

"DVD-video" files aren't AVI, they are MPEG-2 and they have to be "authored"
properly in order to meet "book standard" DVD-video specifications in order
for the player to recognize the disc as a "DVD-video".

If you are trying to copy an AVI file to a DVD what you will end up with is
a "DVD-data" disc. It will play in a DVD-ROM drive on a computer but not in
a standard set top player.

Also, take a look at the file size.
Chances are your AVI file is WAY WAY WAY TOO BIG to fit on a DVD.

RealPlayer is a very poor choice to use for checking files. Use Windows
Media Player or Zoom Player.
The only thing RealPlayer is good for is RealMedia files that stream on the
web from a RealMedia server.

Your DVD burning program should be able to convert your AVI file and encode
it to MPEG-2 and author the proper file folders and structures and it should
also tell you if the finished MPEG-2 file (from the AVI) is small enough to
FIT ON YOUR DISC.

Good luck with your project,

JeffH
