At a guess, I'd say that one other possible way is to buy a broadcast quality
camera with no internal recording and export the clips to computer in real
time. Obviously the PC is still using mechanical components, but you can
minimise data loss by use of RAID.

A really viable alternative is to wait for a while until the next generation of
flash HDDs is on sale. This promises to be one of the biggest breakthroughs in
HDD technology for a very long time, and it's ideally suited to portable
devices, such as camcorders and laptops.

One thing to watch for when contemplating a new device is viewfinding
facilities. My original Sony Digital DCR-TRV340E still gives excellent service
and has a B/W viewfinder as well as a colour LCD screen. It's main disadvantage
is that tapes only last for 1 hour, and often with the shows that I record,
each half will last more than 1 hour! My wife bought me a birthday present of a
Sony DSR-TRV70E (as a surprise, so I didn't get to review it before purchase)
which has a 60Gb HDD and I now have a battery that will give up to 16 hours
recording on one charge! It has two disadvantages - it's file transfer
capability (USBII) is abysmal, but I have overcome that problem. It's worst
fault is that it has no 'proper' viewfinder, so it's useless in bright daylight
or sunlight! It also has no direct output when recording so I can't even view
real time recording on a laptop! Too many silly gimmicks like 'touch screen'
and instant DVD burn which (IMO) are for nerds. A proper viewfinder would be a
far better facility for the money. That HandyCam was over 600GBP last January,
but is only worth about 300GBP second hand now. Birthday present or not, I
can't wait to cut my losses and sell it, to buy an HD machine that has a real
viewfinder, but that means I need to put another 400GBP to the selling price!

Alan.

Subject: [AP] Alternatives for shooting to tape?

For example, the Panasonic AG-HVX200 records to both tape and P2
card. Mechanical tape drive problems in my Sony PD150 are my direct
reason for shopping for a new camcorder, the rest of my PD150 is
still in perfect condition. So replacing it with a camcorder without
  mechanical parts would be good.

What realistic alternatives do we have for recording using mechanical
parts (thus no tape, no DVD, no harddisk recording)?
