Thanks for the reply Sune.

I have done exactly what you suggest, played the 8mm tape with my old camcorder 
and did a passthrough with my DV camera.  I wasn't very happy with the results 
though.  They were acceptable but I was hoping that someone with "professional" 
equipment might get better results.  Gee, I hope it's not true that this is the 
way that everyone is doing it.  :-(
