I've been using Encore from 1.0 to CS2 (cant afford CS3 yet and have
no immediate need for HD authoring) and agree its a steep learning
curve but once mastered it is powerful and Photoshop integration is a
great boon. Now I enjoy working with it.
However, it is VERY particular about the assets it will accept as
being compliant and I too have had problems with Procoder encoded
*.m2v files not being accepted. If you want to use an external
encoder then go for MainConcept, its their internal encoder that
Adobe use in Premiere and Encore. Sony also use it in Vegas so DVD
compliant files rendered there will also be accepted by Encore
As an alternative to Encore I have had great success with DVD Lap Pro
2 (but no HD yet). You need to get under the hood a bit more than you
do with Encore but it in extremely flexible and allows you to make
DVDs of assets that may not be 100% compliant. For example it will
allow you to use directly Broadcast mpeg2 files (704x576 PAL and not
the usual DVD 720x576 PAL) where as Encore will insist on re-encoding
them.
