thank you all for suggestions and comments. I always keep emails from this list if I think I may need it in the future, building sort of a local knowledge base.
I did wind up capturing from the mini-dv tapes directly into PP2 and everything worked fine. It's possible the tapes were copied onto the external drive with a different codec but whatever the case, capturing into PP did the trick. Thanks all.
