Thanks so much lmenningen...really neat advice...

I have heard that before - what you said about the OPERATOR being
first and foremost in importance. I'm a bumbling video idiot right
now, but as a successful music person, I feel like I might have an
artistic edge starting, and feel like I've at least made my $200
camera look like a $300 one...HA-HA! . I am 43 years old, and feel
like I am being born again. I have such fascination (ok...obsession)
with this right now that I'm not sleeping much. That same obsession
got me from zero experience in music, into working in Nashville (I
commute periodically between home in South Georgia and Nashville), so
I think I'm on the right track. My goal is to make the young artists
(several up-and-coming young artists, in addition to my own band) I
work with LOOK GOOD, and for the moment, provide them with a service
and a marketable package that, if they had to rely on the regular
Nashville process, they would not be able to afford, and thus would be
swallowed up and eliminated by the industry. so, believe it or not,
profit, is not my first motive. I want to be able to sustain myself
and not go broke, but right now, the top priority is great artistic video.

May I invite you and everyone else here to view and comment on several
videos I am studying right now? PLEASE forgive me if this is an
"uncool" thing to ask in this group as I am new to this, but I would
be SO SO SO thankful to get critiques on these videos, and
observations on what works and what doesn't. I'm too embarrassed to
share my own work right now, so instead I will share the videos of
people I have worked with MUSICALLY. Thanks in advance if anyone can
offer thoughts on these:

"Stages and Stereos" (a young rock band, including two of my music
students). Done by "Eat Cake Films" (graduates of Full Sail) in
Orlando. I like this video, but see room for improvement (e.g.
smoother camera movement):

"Forget My Name" (Ray Stephenson) - this was super low budget, and
just done by the artist. This guy is one of the best songwriters I
know in Nashville, and he's originally from Albany, GA, close to me in
Bainbridge. I like his use of unusual lighting and textures:

"Rainy Day" (Eric Durrance, formerly of "Big Dismal" - Tallahassee,
FL) - this guy has actually run sound for me, and now he's about to be
HUGE in Nashville. This is my favorite, and has an example of what I
call that "slow motion effect" - that effect where even though his
lips are synced in time with the words, it still looks like he's in
slow motion (it's driving me NUTS not to be able to do that...lol!),
which I'm assuming must have been done either with film or 24fps video
(????)...I know this is LIGHT YEARS away from my capability, and I
probably won't achieve this in this lifetime, but it's still a good
learning tool:

Rubin Singleton - Has done vocals on some of my recording work, and
has appeared in some theater productions that I have co-written, and
currently appears off and on with Beyonce as a dancer and backup
singer. While this is not my style, I like the clarity and some of the
lighting techniques:

...I chose to share videos of people here that I actually KNOW and
have worked with, because they are people I can actually call up on
the phone, and get ideas from, however I still use CMT as the great
learning standard of course (that's where I sit, watch, and physically
take notes). I would love any comments on these videos, and even some
guesses as to what sort of equipment was used (cameras, lights,
editing software).

Hope this has not been too presumptuous of me, but I am in
"obsession-mode" right now, and would love some feedback.

Any suggestions on Sony cameras by the way, in my price range (under
$2000)? Sony HDR12?, allowing me to still buy the full Premiere Pro
package, or something better like the Sony HVR-HD series? I'm clueless
on cameras...

Thanks so much!
Steve
