Thanks for the input Lee. I too have studied and studied music videos,
asking the same question as you about why is there SO much switching,
so fast, and so many abstract elements that seem to have very little
to do with the subject matter of the song in the music video. I have
even sat with a stop watch and tried to TIME a given clip, and the
attempt is futile because hardly ever is there a clip lasting more
than one second. That being said, I would have to agree that it DOES
INDEED seem to be a fad, however, I am forced to conclude in my gut,
that it is the "right thing" to be doing. For whatever seems to work
or not work, I supposed I cannot disagree with the success of a
multi-billion dollar industry, and must also confess, that when I get
around to making my own REAL music videos (as soon as I figure out
what the heck I'm going to be buying, e.g. camera and/or software), I
will probably be copying a LOT of these elements. The logic I draw on
is from my songwriting experience, one of the cardinal rules of which
says, NEVER "spell it all out" for your audience. I think to "tell the
whole story" in a music video would be to undermine the
creative/imaginative thought processes of the viewer. There seems to
be so much abstractness in music videos these days, but it DOES seem
to work. In my own songs, and the HIT songs that I know and love, as
well as those written by my songwriting friends that are really good,
there is a certain element of LEAVING OUT the whole story. I think
there is value in allowing your audience to fill in the blanks, and
draw their own conclusions. The best-written songs to me always seem
to be those wherein the lyrics could mean two or three different
things. That being said, I'm personally going to try to shoot for that
same creative edge in my (eventual) music videos. I want enough random
and abstract color, texture, and depth that the audience can be left
wondering "what the heck?", and wanting to GO BACK AND WATCH AGAIN, to
try to figure out exactly what was being conveyed.

That being said, the FIRST thing I still have to do, is buy some
equipment! Anybody come up with any ideas yet for my BIG FAT $2000
budget? Lol...

Take care all...
Steve
