As it turns out, you can do a lot with a codec while encoding video.
You have a choice of codecs, which can affect the quality of the
encoded video and the file size, among other things, and once you've
chosen you can set many different encoding parameters that also
affect quality and file size. Most people have encountered those
controls when saving a JPEG image or ripping an audio MP3 file.
There's usually a slider that increases quality along with file size.

Premiere offers a welter of codec controls for each possible codec,
but there's little to no documentation for these controls. Successful
encoding is getting to know those controls and their effects on the
final encoded video. It's sometimes more of an art than a science,
and I wish I knew more about it. Premiere documentation, such as it
is, rarely touches on those codec controls.

Does anyone know a good source of information about the subtleties of
codec settings?
