thanks for the solution.
that's exactly what i'm doing right now since the low memory msg problem has
started. because can't afford the work being held up for these many days. but,
here again the time taken to to export the so-aligned clips to a movie becomes
fairly high(let's say for a 2.30 hours of footage it comes to 2.30 hrs of
capture + 20-30 mins of aligning the clips + 2 hrs exporting the aligned clips
to a single avi. so that comes to a total of something around 5 hrs. just the
double time. also, that exporting the captured video to avi would cause
compression and thus the quality would deteriorate. i don't, very exactly know
by how much but, its something in the ratio of 4:1. can u explain how
this(compression) works and how does it affect the footage quality(is it in
terms of sharpness of the footage or ... how) ?

hope this wouldn't be bugging u'll.

regards,
malli

All information you’ve provided point to insufficient memory – PPro CS3&4
didn’t
handle out-of-memory situations gracefully. Task Manager should be able to
prove
it. So let’s assume that to be the case.

If you’re using Premiere Pro, are you sure you need “continuously captured
video”, in light of the fact that Premiere is a frame-accurate editing tool?

Suppose you captured a 20/30-minute segment into a file, then stop it and start
a new capture that begins slightly before where clip 1 left off, making a
second
file. Can you do that? Repeat until the entire tape is captured in chunks. When
done capturing, place clip 1 on a timeline track 1, and put clip 2 on track 2
with its beginning overlapping the end of clip 1. Clip 3 can go on track 1,
overlapping the tail end of clip 2 similarly, followed by clip 4, etc. To
adjust
the clips you slide a clip forward or backward until the frames are aligned
perfectly. If these clips have audio with them, using the audio can make it
easier to align two overlapping tracks.

When all clips are aligned perfectly they can be cut and shifted to the same
track. Better yet, they can be left on separate tracks and then the entire
timeline can be placed onto a new timeline where it will occupy just one track
(this method allows easier corrections). The final result is exactly the same
as
if you captured multiple hours as one long file.

Hoping this suggestion helps…

yes, was a bit confused with the term memory usage.

the msg occurs after 39-50 mins of starting the capture.

there's no chance to save the work. after this msg also get another msg : C++
runtime library error. an unexpected error occured - premiere needs to shut
down.

also, i need continuously captured video, so even if it allows saving it
wouldn't be that worth.

malli

Sorry – I used the phrase “memory usage” which you took to mean CPU
Utilization.

In Task Manager, on the Processes tab, watch the column Commit Size for Adobe
Premiere Pro (and with CS4 there is an associated server task whose name I
forgot that must also be considered.) and watch how much memory is used. I
forgot the specific numbers for a 32-bit system but you can watch the memory
usage creeping upward. That’s an indication it is acquiring more memory.

When you get the message, the system is still working, right? I wish someone
who

knows capture would chime in, but since the message says “Save your work”, I
wonder whether you could do a save; perhaps the full buffers might then be
written to disk thus making them available for more capturing. Is that possible
– that is, when the message pops up perform a save, then resume capturing? Just
a question.

as u said, it's a bit mysterious- yes, even i feel. earlier had the same prob
and was adviced to change the hard drive- later the ram chips- still further
the

mother board. though nothing seemed logical have changed them. for some days
the

things go well. and again the low system memory msg pops up.

have examined the task manager and found that sometimes for a couple of
seconds.

the memory usage shoots up to 100% and that's the time i get the msg. by the
time i go to the process tab of the task manager the usage dives to something
between 33%-2%.

the pc is specifically used only for premiere nothing else - not using ae/pshp,
etc. on it simply because they might cause probs. theoretically speaking it
shouldn't, but to be on a safer side not using them on this pc. things were
fairly going well can't make out what's wrong. hours of work being held up.

malli.

Your problem is a little mysterious because you said that in the past you could
capture fine, but now you can’t. What changed between when you could capture
and

now?

Running low on memory was/is a common problem for CS3 and more so for CS4,
especially during rendering. I hadn’t previously heard that capturing was a
problem (but I have never had to capture so I never personally ran that
capability).

I believe your warning message means the actual available physical memory, not
disk space. It is starved for more memory. You can verify this by examining
memory usage with Task Manager. By way of explanation, on a 32-bit system the
application might be getting less than 1G from the OS (you have 4G installed
but

there is actually only about 3.4 usable total, the OS kernel and drivers use
some of that, and then the OS allocates the remaining between all applications
such as CS3 but none will be allowed to have all the remaining, only a part of
it). Note that capturing might not be able to use virtual memory for
performance

reasons, it may require sufficient physical memory buffers.

There are a few things you can do, but not much. Adobe’s advice for 32-bit
users

was to examine the Windows startup processes and to eliminate as many of them
as

possible. No anti-virus, no unnecessary drivers, no background monitoring
processes, mail, etc. And when you do run Premiere, make sure no other
application is running. Doing this frees up as much memory as possible.
Unfortunately the actual quantity freed may still be inadequate, but if your
system is border line, it may help.

As an aside, I often received those low-memory warnings during rendering or
encoding when I had CS3 and CS4, and the system would sometimes crash or
hang-up. Eventually I learned that Adobe knew of the situation but that they
were going to focus on 64-bit because they felt a 32-bit system couldn’t give
enough memory to the Adobe application. I believe the current Premiere Pro is
64-bit only, probably for that reason.

and thus will not allow to capture the video. there's enough of free disk

i run windows- xp 32-bit and premiere pro cs3 and capturing SD.

what should be done ? plz help.

You're running 64-bit Windows and 64-bit Premiere Pro, or what? Are you
capturing SD or HD (this affects the amount of application memory needed)?
