No, I commonly have mono audio tracks feeding to a stereo master. (E.g. 
announcer on one microphone into left camera channel; crowd/ambient on another 
into right camera channel. Map to mono, so when add to timeline, I have two 
mono tracks, each feeding to the stereo master. A mono track feeding to a 
stereo master just adds the same thing to both. I balance each original track 
as I want it to sound, and the balance is easy.)

Try the test using one track at a time (just click the solo button in the mixer 
or the speaker icons in the timeline) to see if you can narrow down what is 
okay.
