Thanks all for the suggestions. It sounds like Firewire to USB isn't
feasible, and that even if it is, Premiere wouldn't capture from the
USB stream. That's a problem for my friend who has three computers
without card capabilities (two laptops without expansion slots and a
"media center" computer without card slots). He just assumed one of
them would have Firewire, but they don't. It sounds like Firewire is
fading into the digital past along with floppy drives and CRT monitors.
Perhaps the best solution offered is to buy a cheap used computer
with Firewire just for Firewire capture.
All of this makes me glad I've switched to AVCHD video and simple
file transfers from the camcorder to the computer.
