Reading the label on the tape is the documented fall-back for when the barcode
cannot be read. Check the tape to assure that there is a barcode on it, that
it is properly affixed (not askew), and that its bars are distinct. (The
barcodes from some companies are rather smudgy, making reading difficult.)
If this is the only tape that this is happening with, then it would be that
one tape. If all tapes, then have a service technician have a look at the
barcode reader itself.
