The laws of Italy and the UK (the ones I know), are based on the
assumption that the individual is a Christian. In fact, you will see,
that in criminal law, the accused will not be deemed guilty not until
he has "confessed" (the sacrament of confession) and admitted (his
conscience comes to play into this) his crime. As long as a criminal
does not confess....he will never be found guilty. Hence the need to
provide evidence to be put in front of him for him to "admit" the
crime in question.

There is no justice, there is only a legal system that needs to be run
in the most efficient and expedient way. Read "the trial" by Kafka
and  you will get the idea of what the legal system is.
