Java and commercial Java applications, especially for the web are a big
deal in corporate web shops. Take a close look at the types of jobs and
the job titles...few jobs are for Perl only, but people can get a
high-paying gig just doing Java as a 'Programming Engineer' or somesuch. 

As deepthroat says, "Follow the money."

The books are only a small symptom of a far larger trend.
