It's not so much *what* perl can do, rather it's that perl is doing something at all. It seems that with perl and open source, some organizations need a little encouragement. I've had people tell me that they've been approved to set up linux servers and run perl apps because supervisors have read of mission-critical implementations at the Census I've publicized.
