I'm not sure who won the match -- but I do have my doubts about the line judge, Cheerskep, when he writes:
"In all walks of life we are justified in rejecting entire genres without exposing ourselves to every possible instances of them. My wife will not watch any prize fight; she hates the genre. I wouldn't require her to watch an interminable number of bouts before she would be entitled to say she hates the genre." .... because it's important to notice that 'jazz' is a much bigger umbrella than 'prize fight' I realize that, like all claims regarding the arts, the above statement is debatable -- and perhaps, to the fight aficionado, every bout is as different as every sub-genre of jazz -- but I would assert that such a claim is the result of too many blows to the head. Of course, the explication of my argument is not an easy one -- I would have to begin to list, exemplify, and characterize all of those genres, from Dixieland to experimental. Perhaps Derek would fall asleep before the explication was done - and he is certainly justified in ignoring whatever he wants to. But - still -- Alan is correct to test the breadth and depth of his interlocutor's experience -- if the conversation is going to proceed (even if those of us who have known Derek for many years already knew what the results of that test would be) BTW -- listers should visit Alan's website: http://www.kyushu-ns.ac.jp/~allan/Documents/ajs-00.html He seems to be living in two cultures -- and the site itself has its own, curious, kind-of-Japanese aesthetic -- as well as presenting his "Musician Career Path Research Project" -- which includes jazz, but seems to focus on the act of improvisation wherever it might occur. _____________________________________________________________ Earn up to $150/hour as a paralegal.
