I skipped a step. As I understand what you say, you use "meaningless" to indicate that there is no predetermined signified for any potential signifier, such as a painting. It's "meaningless" until the viewer provides the meaning. That's the detaching I was thinking of, so that my punning is an act of arbitrarily switching signifieds, changing the "meaning," whereas your paintings are signifiers waiting to have a signification adjoined to them.
