But considered seriously,  why can't a photograph of me be used that way ?

Don't you use photographs of yourself that way -- especially if they were
taken decades ago, back before hopes had been replaced by experience ?

And, of course, even if the photograph is a "mere image" as far as you are
concerned,  others who know you might feel differently.

(I 've just posted a picture of my father taken in 1954.   He may never have
given it a second thought, but for me it's endlessly fascinating )
