My discussion of a producer's commentary on a television series is what
provoked this discussion - and as listers may recall, I found it valuable not
for my understanding of that drama, but for how I might use that drama to
exemplify the real-world situation which I was discussing (institutional
compromise)

When watching the series myself, as always, I followed the precepts of Dr.
Immersion and Dr. Tingle -- to allow (as Dr. Conger puts it) the reading to be
"integrated with the his or her subjectivity."

So, I do appreciate Cheerskep's admonition against experiencing "the play as
merely a useful ladder leading up to the real value: a non-fiction lesson."

But, although Cheerskep firmly claims otherwise, yes, there is an ontic
difference between reading a book and discussing it afterwards -- just as
there is a difference between being in Kuai and then being back in Chicago.

BTW - I just auditioned another artist's commentary: the Derek Jarman
interview that accompanied the DVD release of his film, "Caravaggio".
(remember Derek Jarman? The list was recently solicited to review a critical
discussion of his work)

I had very much wanted to like the film -- because I love Caravaggio and had
spent $24 for the DVD, but I just couldn't get beyond the first hour. As
Jarman explained in the interview, he considered the film to be successful
because the entire cast had such a good time making it -- and by those
standards, I would have to agree with him.
Though, that also accounts for why I regret purchasing it - and I appreciate
his providing such a clear explanation for my dismay. He had pulled
Caravaggio down to his own level - and even re-painted the master's works in
his own awful, sloppy style.

Self indulgence, which characterizes so much of the contemporary art world and
art education, is incompatible with the pursuit of any kind of excellence.
