> We can never fully know what a bad means is, or how much bad is in any means or how much does it take to produce a bad end, etc., etc. The if-then proposition is only good within carefully defined, highly limited parameters. (WC)
Agreed. Which is why I didn't present an if-then proposition, but only said "Self indulgence... is incompatible with the pursuit of any kind of excellence." And as I suggested, this does introduce a critique of the "liberation from value b political, aesthetic, moral." in the contemporary art world and art education. Mimesis, on the other hand, has been quite compatible with a pursuit of excellence, and mimetic success was offered as an important achievement in the author's commentary to the HBO series, "The Wire", where both police and drug runners were quoted as acknowledging it as true-to-life. Which is a very demanding standard. Far more demanding than "we had fun making it" which was Derek Jarman's evaluation of his film about Caravaggio. And even if you prefer the Derek Jarman film - wouldn't you still say that his commentary helps to explain your preference? ____________________________________________________________ Diet Help Cheap Diet Help Tips.
