That never crosses my mind. I have never thought "that guy knows how to talk to me" or "I have something to tell people." Never. It's always, "I like that piece for x, y, or z reasons." I can generally isolate what aspects of the work have a strong impact on me > And yet I can also feel he is oblivious to me. I don't feel the painter of "Sunflowers" has any concern for me personally. I don't think that's ever part of the experience. I always work from the premise that if people respond (hopefully favorable, but even unfavorably) to my paintings, then something in them was significant enough to arouse their interest and a response.
