There's a ton to say on this subject. The contrast I might draw is between 
two of my favorite illustrator-portraitists of recent times -- Al Hirschfeld 
and (no rock-throwing, please) Norman Rockwell.   

Just the other night a friend quoted a remark by a taker-outer modern poet 
(perhaps Frost?). He said: "There are no long poems."
