I’m not going to open it up, but my guess is it’s actually a 12V lithium battery stack with very high current capability. There’s definitely some smart circuitry in there, but to prevent connecting it wrong and to only apply voltage once it’s hooked up to a battery.
Keep in mind these things are only for short bursts of current to start the engine. I think the manual talks about letting it rest for 15 minutes after 5 tries, and only getting 20-40 tries on a charge. It does have a USB port for charging your cellphone, and a built-in flashlight. There are 2 ways to charge it, USB or the 12V power port (we used to call it a cigarette lighter) on a vehicle. USB method takes a long time. High voltage battery pack with a huge DC-DC convertor or what? Does not seem possible but my son has one and we use it on construction equipment all the time. At $200 it’s not cheap, actually more than a spare battery and a set of jumper cables. But this gizmo is a lot safer and more compact. No sparks to set off a hydrogen explosion, and no worries about reverse polarity or shorting the cables together. He has an old Grand Prix GXP which is hard to turn over and also seems to eat batteries every 2-3 years. Oh, and it’s wicked cold out. _____ -- AF mailing list [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> http://af.afmug.com/mailman/listinfo/af_af.afmug.com
