If you put a volt meter on it I bet you see more like 16-18 volts while it's trying to boost the car battery.
I've done the same with a Milwaukee 18v drill battery and two short wires. Works surprisingly well. Saved myself calling for a jump several times when I left a van door open too long at a tower site.
