I've become old enough that I appreciate the time savings that buying a thing can offer more now than when I was younger. There was a time when I'd stand up a custom server and install linux just to have a file server, now I'll just buy a Synology so I can spend time on other things since. Also back when I was first building linux file servers there weren't any linux-based NAS appliances, but now there are so that's a task I can skip if I choose to.
