For people with non fiber Internet I usually advise thinking about the upstream bandwidth. Like, what is the bitrate when you watch Netflix in 1080p, and do you need to see the UPS guy’s butt walking away from your door in HD?
Some people have multiple cameras, all streaming to the cloud all the time rather than motion activated. 1080p times 3 to 5 cameras is a lot of bandwidth. It would be nice if these things would stream low res video and alerts to the cloud, but store higher res video locally. Maybe motion activated or on a loop so you don’t need terabytes of storage. Of course I also have people who just want to log into their home cameras occasionally when they’re out of town to watch the leaves change colors in fall or check that the service is mowing the grass. In that case they don’t need a cloud DVR, just the ability to connect remotely to the cameras when they want to watch. That is the big difference in the pricing. It appears I can rig up some external power to all models. Any opinions on resolutions? Interesting. So the ring camera sucks on doorbell power but not enough to trigger the original doorbell. So it is 100% backwards compatible with your existing AC powered doorbell. Then when you push the button on the camera it simply shorts out the original doorbell circuit as the original doorbell push button would do. They recommend a 25 ohm 50 watt resistor to be placed in series with the camera if the actual doorbell chime is not in the circuit. Now, I wonder how low you can go with volts and VA on a powering transformer. Go low enough and the resistor will not be needed.
