Phone is fruit.

I come from a time when I was THE telephone repairman in an area of North Central Oregon. We owned the phones. The line cords were terminated with screws. Wall phones were screwed to the wall. Jacks could be had if you wanted to rent them from us and they were 4 big prongs. I actually FIXED the phone. Clear down to adjusting the mechanical governor that regulated dial speed.

Then the FCC decided people should have the right to own their own phone. I had to go to every phone in the whole exchange and put modular jacks on the walls and new line cords on the phones. Still our phones. But they had the option to buy one and plug it in.

Then the FCC decided that people should be able to own their own inside wiring. So we had to go back to ever dwelling in the exchange and install an NID. Since that time the customers have been on their own. We did sell a "line backer" type of inside wiring insurance plan. I presume that is still an option from ILECS but they never covered the "instrument" itself.

So, buy her a new phone and install it for her. Be a mensch.

Subject: [AFMUG] Tracking down analog problems

I have a very nice elderly lady who is having phone problems. It seems
like she might have an analog phone in her house acing up. Going off
hook on it's own causing busy signals, redialing calls randomly in the
middle of the night. How much troubleshooting of the analog system do
you do?

She calls me from her 'cell phone' which I finally realized is what she
is calling a cordless phone, she keeps her 'land line' phone down in the
basement. So I'm thinking telling her to go buy a new phone would be a
little beyond her reach. How would a Big Telco handle a problem like
this? Bill for a dispatch? Just keep telling here there is no problem
and walk away? I'm tempted to give her a new cordless phone, but that
seems like it would be asking for endless questions about how to use it.
