I try hard not to do single-source items. And usually have qualified multiple parts.
The ones which are kicking my rear this year are the 25Mhz MEMS oscillators. These are the standard clock oscillator for anything ethernet. I have a specific size I use and also voltage, temperature, and ppm specs. This is of a part where mouser lists 118 potentially-compatible parts. Of all of these 118 types, right now mouser has 1 in stock. As in 1 total piece, not one type. Many of these have tens of thousands on order, but with lead times into 2022 or sometimes 2023 at this point. I've qualified no less than 5 different oscillators this year for this part. The problem has been how inconsistent the supply is. I finally figured out how to use the (cancellable) scheduled delivery to take 10 in for qualification, and schedule a few months months worth to come in 30 days or so. And then scheduled reorders for at least a years worth of demand. But even that bit me in the rear when mouser had to cancel the reorders on one part due to lack of supply. The part I'm dealing with today has been one where we had a scheduled order for, yet the due dates kept getting pushed out and out. The last note we got was basically that the vendor could not provide an estimate at this time. So I'm off finding another part. In this case, I've lucked out and what used to be a single vendor type of part is now available from a couple of other manufacturers in a form which has the same pinout but slightly different specs (as in need a firmware update different specs).
