My worry about the 30KW of batteries is a "what if"...   It's basically a monster electrical bomb...  I fused them, but if something happens to one of them in the rack, it isn't going to be pretty...  Water is my worry...

It’s that ‘almost’ that drives me nuts. With over 100 sites and multiple
generators the odds of all of them starting all of the time are low. Yes we
do self tests (and sometimes even notice when they fail) but even then they
sometimes still manage to let us down.

My generator "almost always" will start and run in 2 minutes. I just realized
that I did not do what I used to do with all the generators. I would relocate the
battery into the temp controlled building and put an aux trickle charger on them. We
need to do that with my latest central office. I also had telemetry on them so we could
remotely check on them to see if they were exercising each week.

Heh…. 2 minutes while the genset starts is a fantasy. Minimum is 4 hours
of battery so when the power goes out and the generator fails to start that you
have time to go to the shop, get a portable generator, drive to the site and
beat the standby generator into submission or hook up the portable. 24 hours of
battery if you like to sleep.

20kw genset with transfer switch is 5k. don't know if this is a better
solution. I would venture to state that it would not be. Drop in a genset and
a small battery just to keep things up for the 2 minutes while the genset
starts.

I would never want to be without a generator, irrespective of the
size of my battery. A car crash on the right pole can have you out
of commercial power for days, I know of one road it was out for a
full month. Freight train caught a transmission line and about 20
100’ poles all snapped off like dominos.
