I actually worked for “The Telephone Company” once upon a time. It was a DBA of Beehive Telephone Company. They filed for it I think when equal access was proposed.

Apparently if you made a collect call from a pay phone the operator would ask which carrier to use, and a lot of people would say "I Don't Care". I think the story was that it ended up in court.
