I recall in the 80's seeing something on 20/20 or 60 Minutes about a phone 
company called "I Don't Care."
Apparently if you made a collect call from a pay phone the operator would ask 
which carrier to use, and a lot of people would say "I Don't Care".

I think the story was that it ended up in court.  The court said they didn't do 
anything wrong, so they doubled down and filed paperwork to create a bunch of 
additional company names like "Whichever is cheapest" and "Just pick one".

At least in the case of Comcast, they see their "cable business" (NBC
included) as declining value, so they are shifting their revenue stream to the 
one thing they have left.
