I've done it once and it's worked out great. Maybe I'll keep it at once. ;-)

Same here on self install. I tried it 4 times that I recall. One did everything
right, one did everything wrong and needed lots of help, one did everything ok
except he didn't plug in the PoE correctly (and was a major ass on the phone
about it not working, and didn't have the decency to show any shame when the
mistake was pointed out). All of them except one needed enough phone support
time that I could have gone and done it myself.

Most of the time I think I would rather do my own install for free than rely on
the customer to do it. My experience is not a good sample size.....but even if
all your customers are geniuses, that doesn't mean they know what good
practices are for cabling or antenna placement.

Self-install always gives me the heebie-jeebies, maybe it’s just a matter of
spelling out we don’t come out for free and fix problems that were caused by
your install job, and we don’t let your poor signal bog down the whole AP.

Anyway, I’m seeing more and more of these metal roofs on buildings. Not just
pole buildings, but houses, both new construction and re-roofs. So being able
to mount to fascia boards, gable ends, etc. is getting more important. I’m a
lot more comfortable doing that with a CLIP or integrated panel than with a
reflector dish, given the winds out here in windfarm land. And 12x12 is a nice
size.

We don’t really use 450 in NLOS situations, but I know those of you who do
would like a mid-gain option, the thinking being that a bare SM doesn’t have
enough oomph to punch through trees, but a dish focuses the beam too much to
capture signal off the leaves.

That would help our Self-Install customers a lot.
If it ends up to be much more expensive than SM + $60 reflector dish, it may
not be desirable. Cost is a big motivator.

If I were to say that there would be a 12” square flat panel (think about the
PMP 450i integrated SM tilted at a 45 degree) for 3.65 GHz available, would
there be strong interest in this from this crowd?

It would be somewhat more expensive, but would have an integrated 19 dBi flat
panel antenna, and the PMP 450i rear housing (but contain the existing 450 SM
PCB).

We put up a 3.65 connectorized SM with a tan Mars 15x15 panel oriented like a
diamond, on some customer’s upscale house that was the exact same color. He was
very happy. I just hope he doesn’t tell all his neighbors and they want it too,
because it was really too expensive by the time you add up the premium for 3.65
+ the premium for connectorized SM + a fairly expensive panel antenna. Also the
pigtails just reached, but Cambium is working on that.

So an integrated panel would be nice. Although the 3.65 bare SMs work amazingly
well at 1-2 miles.

The throughput issues with both bridge mode and especially NAT mode was
resolved with 13.2. I think Aaron posted some screenshots while they were
working on it. If your linktest gets you say 60x20Mbps, you can get very close
to that in bridge mode, NAT mode is slightly less, but it's not as bad as it
used to be (was about 10Mbps!).

We will probably move to the 450d SM for 5GHz and do away with reflectors and
Stingers (sorry Chuck). We are also not doing any more 2.4GHz. We have a single
sector up with about 25 SMs on it and it works fine for the most part, but the
noise is horrible. And all I want for 3GHz is an integrated panel SM.

Yeah they max out way before the AP does...30meg might be right....but we're
not usually selling more than that to one customer.

There's room in the market for a higher end SM for sure.

Higher peak Tx power also brings about higher Tx power at max modulation. Tx
power at lowest modulation doesn't mean much to me.

Weren't there complains that the 450 SMs were running out of steam at like 30
megabit?

I can also see why you wouldn't do it.
450d can max out the (FCC) legal EIRP with the available tx power. The higher
pps, faster processor, etc are features more useful for an AP. Maybe they keep
the cost down a little by NOT doing more with that one.

Or phrased another way, maybe 450di would be the ideal CPE except nobody would
buy it because the 450d was cheaper.

....just speculation.

*nods* The press release prompted the question.

It seems like a 450di would be the ideal 450 CPE. ;-)

These are two different products, addressing different markets. Cambium is hard
at work getting new products released at an increased rate, all with the goal
of providing solutions to help you guys build your businesses…

Check out the Press Release and additional information on the 450i, which was
just released this morning:

Feel free to ask questions about it here, or on our forum site also:

Am I correct in that these two products were developed independently of each
others' advancements? the 450d is just a regular 450 feature set in a dish form
factor and the 450i is all of the new capabilities, but in the traditional form
factors?
