They didn't have as much electric back then either. There used to be a house in my family that was built probably in the 20's It had 1 20A fuse for the whole house, and ran a single set of wires around the house.
No TV, Gas refrigerator, Wood Stove. All they needed electric for were a couple of those new fangled lights and a radio.

Back in those days you would probably be fine with 50 amps for

Very interesting.  However, I don't believe the explanation about the 
fuses in the plug being due to a copper shortage.  If I plugged in one 
hundred one amp devices then I would have 100 amps on the circuit, but 
the fused cord in individual devices wouldn't blow.



We do have those shutters on new plugs in the USA (or is that just 
NY?).  I suppose I must thank the UK.

I do like 220 everywhere.  I wonder if it is referenced to earth ground?

Seems like it would be safer to float it.  And with 220 your wires 
can be so much smaller.

If we really wanted everything to be safe we would use shuttered 
BS1363 (UK code) receptacles with fused plugs, even for 120VAC 15A 
circuits.



Most people in the US have never worked with them, but they're very 
mechanically robust and safe.
