Back in the day, you didn’t have the appliances and the loads. You may have
had a hot plate, or toaster and a radio. I think the fuse in the plug just
reduces fires and shocks from faults in the plug and the appliance.

It is conceivable that I'm an electrical idiot, but I still don't see how the
fuse in the plug protects you.
If I've got a 30 amp ring and I plug in 4 heat guns that each draw 12 amps then
I have 48 amps on the circuit and I should be popping the 30 amp fuse. I would
have thought that each heat gun is still only drawing its own personal 12 amp
and presumably the fuse in it's plug is designed for slightly higher than that.

I presumed he meant one big circuit daisy chained through the house. Perhaps
one main fuse.
Back in those days you would probably be fine with 50 amps for everything.
So it would cut down on wiring for branch circuits.

Very interesting. However, I don't believe the explanation about the fuses
in the plug being due to a copper shortage. If I plugged in one hundred one
amp devices then I would have 100 amps on the circuit, but the fused cord in
individual devices wouldn't blow.

We do have those shutters on new plugs in the USA (or is that just NY?). I
suppose I must thank the UK.

Fused plug is just one more thing to fail and cost you.

I do like 220 everywhere. I wonder if it is referenced to earth ground?
Seems like it would be safer to float it. And with 220 your wires can be
so much smaller.

If we really wanted everything to be safe we would use shuttered BS1363
(UK code) receptacles with fused plugs, even for 120VAC 15A circuits.

Most people in the US have never worked with them, but they're very
mechanically robust and safe.

We added an addition to the quarters at the ambulance I worked for, I

the reason, said it was code too, but ive never verified that, but the reason
makes sense, so ground up ever since for me

It is definitely not upside down! what is wrong with you...

Also, the way that outlet is mounted is... nice!
