I wonder if you could use their 950 license and put some kind of better digital radio on it?

Studio is 10 miles away from first site. They have a 950 analog STL. Not very good LOS, so a direct shot using 5GHz won't work, licensed out of the question. Their other station has two STLs using a building in the middle. The first site will be getting an AM/FM translator and they do not want to spend the money on another STL. So we are building PTPs to them for the translator and also backup for their analog links. They ride our 11GHz most of the way so they are happy about that. They were also concerned about outages and latency over the interwebs. I can understand that. Their studio Comcast service sucks. These are the kind of customers you want (tower owners). I’ve engineered backhaul links for broadcast guys though so I know a bit about the requirements. IMHO it’s a bad idea to put STL traffic on the internet. Packet loss, jitter, latency are all very important metrics. Capacity is low… maybe 2Mbps tops for HD audio (I guess it could be more depending on how many stations are transmitting from that antenna). Give them a dedicated link. Telos/Axia and Whetstone are the two encoder manufacturers I’ve run across. Jeff Holdenrid at DoubleRadius would be a great contact if you’re looking for ways to make the STL work.
