The department I worked at school as a student worker had an mini-car EV that had that problem. It did suck. When it wasn't sucking it was the nicest one. Everything else was gas golf carts. But invariably you'd be at the opposite (downhill) end of campus when it would alarm at you and had to try to get back to the office before it died trying to climb about 120' of elevation change uphill. Eventually someone got tired of its game and the EV disappeared forever.
