I just don’t know how you explain this without sounding like Chipotle adding
a “Special No E. Coli In Your Food Assessment”. Or your kids wanting to be
paid to clean their room.

You could maybe get away with a one time charge to rebuild after a natural
disaster. Or if upgrading equipment for higher speeds, you could only upgrade
the equipment for customers who move to a higher speed plan at a higher cost.

But surge protection, reliable power, etc. is just going to sound like a cost
of doing business. It could backfire as people ask why you didn’t do this
already. Maybe instead get as much PR benefit as you can documenting the
upgrades with stories and photos on your social media pages.

Sure, but sometimes it helps to point things out.

Myself I'd be terrified of losing credibility with my customers if I started
charging them fees for upgrading my equipment. Now if you increase the monthly
rates by a couple of bucks...that is better for you in the long run and they
wouldn't mind any where near as much.

I agree with whoever suggested take an average and build it into your monthly

Well say your repair bill is $10k/mo. If you spend this $95k you save

also saved.

Personally? Probably never. If you have competition then HELL no. I
would strongly advise you look at your contracts to see if you can do that
without getting sued.

Look at it this way. You can a) spend $5k/mo on repairs or b) spend $15k
once to prevent the monthly repair bills.

I was discussing the massive tower upgrade/retrofits that we are doing with
my V.P. right hand man. We are converting from 24vdc to 48vdc, fiber and DC
up the tower, additional grounding at the tower, additional grounding at the
service panel, adding panel surge protectors and adding a circuit surge
protector at our equipment…. All in the interest of reducing a lightning surge
damage. Completely redoing the box and going with EdgePoint S16s up the tower.
All this equals lots of $$ going out the door.

I was discussing the approach that we might take in discussing this with
the property owners where we have put up towers. Panel protectors will
certainly benefit the customers property as well as the Florida storms aren’t
kind, sometimes blowing out expensive appliances in their homes, etc. So, was
thinking of asking for some kind of contribution to help just a little. That
will probably be received OK.

So, my V.P. asked if the “crowd” (you guys) has ever done any “special
assessment” to customers (one time additional fee) as a contribution towards
better reliability. Not sure how that will be received, but it’s an
interesting concept and every little bit would help against the big bill.

Anybody done something like this, involving existing customers.

    Paul
