Ram Dass (a former professor of psychology at Harvard) once called the purpose of our existence to be "Walking Each Other Home" ... to be leading one another to the realization that this whole human experience (consciousness is having for evolutionary purposes) isn't truly what we are ... and in a way, the ultimative goal in every computer game is to undergo the singular trnasition of "stopping to play" again ... to become enlightened from the game characters perspective ... and to transcend the narrow subset of reality one has been navigating within. Just like it's of the end of every good movie ... when you suddenly disidentify with the main actor you have been identifying with for 2 hours ...

"That is what you would think when you go to one of these advanced movies. At such a movie, you would first get to select which character you want to be. Let’s say you decide, “I’ll be James Bond.” Okay, but once you push the button, that’s it. The button had better be on a timer! You, as you currently know yourself, are no longer there. Since all of your thoughts are now James Bond’s thoughts, your entire existing self-concept is gone. Remember, your self-concept is just a collection of thoughts about yourself. Likewise, your emotions are Bond’s and you are watching the movie through his visual and auditory perspective. The only aspect of your being that remains the same is the consciousness that is aware of these objects. It is the same center of awareness that was aware of your old set of thoughts, emotions, and sensory input. Now someone turns off the movie. Immediately, Bond’s thoughts and emotions are replaced with your old set of thoughts and emotions. You’re back to thinking that you’re a forty-year-old woman. All the thoughts match. All the emotions match. Everything looks like, smells like, tastes like, and feels like it did before. But that doesn’t change the fact that it is all just something consciousness is experiencing. It is all just objects of consciousness, and you are the consciousness." -- Michael Singer / "The Untethered Soul"

AGI will just have to come up with even better analogies I guess ...

Yevgeny Abramovich Baratynsky, via Yuri Manin

We diligently observe the world,
We diligently observe people,
And we hope to understand their deepest meaning.
But what is the fruit of long years of study?
What do the sharp eyes finally detect?
What does the haughty mind finally learn
At the height of all experience and thought,
What?  - the exact meaning of an old proverb.
