right, symbols can be anything that is perceivable, so we already know that symbols can be arbitrary and that their meaning is given by their organization in relation to each other and also in relation to other perceptions by a perceiving entity.
i am not sure what track we are on with symbols for now, but my initial point was simply that communication exists outside of using languages that human use to talk to each other. i guess, though, whichever set of symbols you elect to use, you'd still have to bootstrap that set with meaning somehow, so never mind.
